Anticipating the metaverse's potential to immerse students in other worlds, educators today are experimenting with AI, specifically GPT variants, to create role-play scenarios. This study showcases the journey of crafting distinct learning experiences, focusing on understanding subjects, teacher skill development, and fostering empathy, all while gauging the efficacy of different GPT versions.

The potential of the metaverse and immersive experiences in education is tantalising. In the interim, AI is stepping in, serving as a bridge to these immersive worlds. Using advanced versions of GPT, role-play scenarios have been meticulously crafted to serve three distinct purposes:

Experiencing Subjects: By immersing students in environments or situations pertinent to their subjects, they can gain a deeper, tangible understanding of topics, making learning more vivid and memorable.

Teacher Skill Enhancement: Navigating the multi-faceted realm of education demands diverse skills. These AI-driven role-play scenarios can immerse teachers in various school situations, aiding in skill development and preparedness.

Cultivating Empathy: One of the most poignant applications is allowing individuals to step into another's shoes. By simulating experiences, individuals can better empathise, understanding the world from varied perspectives.

Differing versions of GPT were employed, with GPT-4's paid version rendering the most seamless output, albeit not flawless. While GPT-3.5 required individual scenarios and prompt adjustments for optimal performance, GPT-4 offered a combined experience.

See resource links below for example conversations.

The scenario in this case study is genuine and based upon real events and data, however its narration has been crafted by AI to uphold a standardised and clear format for readers.

Key Learning

AI, especially advanced versions like GPT-4, can significantly bolster experiential learning.

Crafting effective role-play scenarios requires meticulous adjustments and prompt fine-tuning.

While AI can simulate experiences, human input remains vital for optimisation and ensuring contextuality.

Risks

Over-reliance on AI-generated experiences might detach learners from real-world nuances.

Inaccuracies or biases in AI outputs might distort the intended learning experience.

Continuous refinement is essential to ensure that AI-driven role-plays resonate with educational objectives.
