Lark Rise Primary School, Dunstable, spearheaded an imaginative endeavour to modernise their library space by producing digital book reviews using AI tools. Key Stage 2 students, with the mentorship of Year 8 Digital Leaders from Denbigh High School, used Blockade Labs and Canva to craft multimedia presentations, offering peers a captivating way to explore book recommendations via QR codes.

Lark Rise Primary School initiated a revolutionary project aimed at elevating the library experience by integrating modern technologies and AI. Students in Key Stage 2 worked collaboratively to formulate scripts for their book reviews, meticulously choosing their favourite scenes and characters from selected books.

This endeavour wasn’t just an exploration of their literary preferences but also a journey into creative expression and technological application. The students were then introduced to Blockade Labs, an AI-powered tool that helped translate their written scripts into visual representations. This step was crucial; it was where their literary skills were blended with technology. The students engaged in extensive research, utilising more sophisticated and descriptive language to ensure the created images were accurate visual representations of their conceptual thoughts about the chosen scenes and characters.

After translating their imaginations into visuals, students migrated their creations to Canva, a digital design platform, presenting another layer of technological interaction. In this phase, the previously created visual elements were carefully and cohesively integrated into a narrative sequence. This wasn’t just about aligning pictures; it was a meticulous process of editing and sequencing to ensure seamless and coherent storytelling. Every visual was deliberately placed, every sequence checked and rechecked to make sure the story flowed seamlessly, reflecting the essence of the selected book accurately and compellingly.

Following this integration, the students returned to their initially developed scripts to record voiceovers. They revisited their documented literary preferences, explaining why their chosen books were special, and articulated their connections to the chosen scenes and characters. These voiceovers were integral, providing a personal touch and adding depth to the visual narratives. To further enrich the presentations, they integrated background music and titles.

The digital book reviews were then linked to library books through QR codes, creating an interactive bridge between traditional and modern literary exploration. These QR codes offered a gateway to fellow students, a modern way to explore book recommendations and peer insights, adding a new dimension to the library experience.

This innovative project at Lark Rise Primary School signifies a harmonious amalgamation of literature and technology. It has redefined the traditional library experience, incorporating multidimensional learning and allowing students to communicate their literary preferences in a more engaging and interactive manner. Through this activity, the students have not only developed a deeper appreciation for literature but have also acquired essential skills, preparing them for the evolving digital future.

The scenario in this case study is genuine and based upon real events and data, however its narration has been crafted by AI to uphold a standardised and clear format for readers.
